YOUGHAL CYMS held the Cork Billiards and Snooker Association (CBSA) under seventeen snooker team championships last weekend at the Market House in a wonderful atmosphere played on excellent tables in the home of the game in East Cork..
There were eight teams involved, six from the home club and two from the Crucible snooker club, so it is easy to see where under age snooker is flourishing in the county and hopefully the growth of the under age game will spread wide and far as clubs like Shooters in Blackpool now back on the scene.
The event was won by the Youghal CYMS 'A' side of Lee Walsh, Kenny Wight and Aaron Tobin and even though ahead of the tournament this side were the red hot favourites, they didn't have it all their own way in the final, where the Youghal CYMS 'B' side of Cian McCarthy, Killian McCarthy and Adam Fitzgerald pushed the Youghal 'A' side all the way.
Killian McCarthy won the first frame of his match with Aaron Tobin, but Kenny Wight was in great form in the final and won his two frames against Adam Fitzgerald.
Lee Walsh was one up, but well behind needing snookers in his match against Cian McCarthy, but Tobin pulled back the next two frames to win the match for Youghal 'A'.
There was a under seventeen Cork City title up for grabs too and Evan O'Leary a very promising young player from the Douglas snooker club won that one frame final defeating another popular player, Shane Hourihan of the Crucible club to win the title.
Youghal CYMS and Championship organiser Brendan Cooney said “At the moment the strength in the under age game is definitely down here in Youghal, but I can see a lot of young talent coming from the City of Cork and in a few years there will be some great battles, just like the ones we have with the Crucible snooker club in the CBSA Cork snooker league. It is great to see the younger players coming through, it is great for Cork snooker to see the younger lads improving all the time and it has been a great day”.
The Youghal CYMS will open its doors again on the 31st of March and on the 1st of April for the Orme Shield, currently housed by last years winners the Crucible.
Congratulations to Lyodd Myers who has made it on the the Republic of Ireland Billiards squad. The AOH man was selected for the Intermediate team and will play in the upcoming match against Northern Ireland, with a date yet to be completely finalised.
Shooters opened its doors to the public last Sunday and it is great to see that John Paul Crowley is back in the ‘Cork Snooker Scene’. Cork Snooker made a visit last Thursday to the brand new club in Blackpool, in the Sunbeam Estate and the new Shooters snooker club is just magnificent.
This club is incredible with ten full size championship PJ Riley tables of an extremely high standard in place and the layout of the tables is perfect. A massive amount of work has gone into the look of the club which is adorned with pictures of World snooker champions, superb seating and viewing areas in the 6,000 square feet floor space.
The immediate reaction you get when you walk in the doors is simply ‘Wow’. Shooters is a match for any club in the country including the Ivy Rooms in Carlow and I have no doubt it will be a venue for some of the country’s top snooker events. The place oozes snooker and there is plenty of space and many other facilities to be put in place over the coming weeks. John Paul Crowley told Rebel Snooker “We are delighted to be back and we hope people will enjoy their time here at shooters, we can’t wait for the Cork Open in April and we are looking forward to the Orme Shield and the CBSA Cork snooker league next season. I hope to have a snooker Pro-Am this year too in association with my table fitters PJ Riley who have done a brilliant job for us and I am just over the moon that Shooters is back up and running and the people of Cork have another snooker outlet to enjoy”.
As well as providing a brand new state of the art snooker club, John Paul has just employed two full time managers as well as two part time staff to run the new club and Shooters will be followed on Facebook and Twitter from the very start. Take our advice go and take a look at the new Shooters snooker club it will take your breath away and the rates our very fair to players and there will be a special juvenile rate in place too. The Shooters Cork Open will be played at the brand new club on Saturday the 28thof April and will a very nice prize pool there will be a big entry, not only from Cork but from all over Munster and further beyond.
There is a Facebook page set up for the event called ‘Shooters Cork Open Championship’ where all the details leading up to the event will be shared and posted.
