The National Billiards Championships (150up format), preliminary rounds down to the last four, took place at The Ivy Rooms Snooker Club, Carlow on Sunday, 6th April 2014. A total of 11 players contested the event, which meant that all four seeded players were awarded a bye into the quarter final stages.
First round eliminations were John Kehoe (Enniscorthy), who lost in a well balanced and close match against Aonghus McAnally (Portmarnock); Dun Laoghaire veteran Victor O’Gorman, who struggled against a loss of stamina in his game against Robert McCrum (Celbridge) and another Dun Laoghaire veteran, making a welcome return to the game after several years absence, Dick Brennan, bowing out in a tightly contested match against current points-up champion Rodney Goggins (Wexford).
In the quarter finals Aonghus McAnally lost 3-0 to the No 1 seed Wayne Doyle (Dun Laoghaire) in a match where the final score-line was not a true reflection of how close the scoring was in all three games. The other quarter final in the top half of the draw, between Brendan Devlin (Celbridge), the only unseeded player in the random draw to get a bye and the No 4 seed Larry Drennan (Kilkenny) saw Brendan get a walkover straight into the semi final when Larry failed to show.
The quarter finals in the bottom half of the draw were both clear-cut 3-0 victories, the No 3 seed and current 150 champion, Aidan Murray (Ivy Rooms) overcoming a spirited game by the recently become left-handed Robert McCrum, while Rodney Goggins was never really challenged in his game with the No 2 seed, Joe Doheny (Borris-in-Ossory).
2014 is the second year that the Senior Billiards Championships was played in both short (150up) and long formats. Based on last year’s experience, the shot format this year was played down to the last four, resulting in an early-evening conclusion to the day’s play.
Congratulations and best of luck to the four semi finalists who play their matches as part of the RIBSA Finals Weekend 23rd to 25th May 2014.
As always, our thanks are due to Jim and Marian Leacy and the staff at the Ivy Rooms Snooker Club for their help on the day and indeed throughout the season.
