Senior Billiards, sixth round to Wayne Doyle.
The sixth tournament of the Senior Billiards series was played at the Ivy Rooms Snooker Club, Carlow on Sunday, 30th of March 2014. Wayne Doyle (Dun Laoghaire), having been to all six finals of the season, made it five wins out of six, firmly establishing himself at the head of the Senior Billiards rankings for the 2013-14 season.
The format for the event was 90 minutes timed, all rounds, including the Final. Bowing out at the early stages were Brendan Devlin (Celbridge), Victor O’Gorman (Dun Laoghaire), Eugene Hughes (Baltinglass), John Kehoe (Enniscorthy), Tommy Denieffe (Kilkenny) and Aidan Murray (Wicklow).
The semi finalists in the top half of the draw were Dun Laoghaireduo of Wayne Doyle and veteran Dick Brennan, both taking their quarter final games by a margin of about 100 points, against Brendan Devlin (Celbridge) and Aonghus McAnally (Portmarnock) respectively. In the semi final, Wayne made a flying start, including a well constructed break of 79 and was soon 100 points ahead. Dick, however, responded, scoring the more heavily of the two when at the table, drawing almost level after an hour’s play, only to fall behind again, perhaps feeling the effects of almost four hour’s continuous play, leaving Wayne to claim his place in the Final.
The semi finalists in the bottom half of the draw were Joe Doheny (Borris-in-Ossory) and Larry Drennan (Kilkenny), both dominating their quarter final matches against John Kehoe (Enniscorthy) and Robert McCrum (Celbridge) respectively. The semi final was nip and tuck all the way, neither player gaining more than 40 points over his opponent. In the event Larry, who was slightly the more dominant throughout, found himself 35 points clear when time was called.
In the Final, Wayne was first to show, putting in early breaks of 62 and 75, and quickly amassing a 200 point lead. Struggling to find any sort of form to counteract the onslaught, and feeling the effects of a long day’s play, Larry decided to call it a day, conceding the game with 40 minutes still on the clock. Many congratulations to Wayne, whose dedication to the game has earned him one of Irish Billiards best ever whole-season performances. Without doubt, he has also made himself a very firm contender for the forthcoming championships.
The next Senior Billiards event will be the 150up championships, down to the last four, to be held at the Ivy Rooms, Carlow on Sunday, 6th April 2014 at 11.00am. Entries will be accepted before 10.30am on the morning of the event.
As always, our thanks are due to Jim and Marian Leacy for the excellent playing facilities and to all at the Ivy Rooms Snooker Club for their help on the day.
