The fifth tournament of the Senior Billiards series was played at Celbridge Snooker Club on Sunday, 23rd of February 2014. Wayne Doyle (Dun Laoghaire), having been to every final of the season so far, further stamped his authority on the Billiards scene by taking the fifth event’s honours and his fourth of the season in a gritty and absorbing Final.
Early round eliminations were Cork duo of Derek O’Neill and Lloyd Myers, local players Darren Ryan, Dara Martin and Robert McCrum, Dun Laoghaire’s Gavin Farrell and Victor O’Gorman, Tommy Denieffe (Kilkenny), Aonghus McAnally (Portmarnock) and regular Billiards finalist, Eugene Hughes (Baltinglass).
The semi finalists in the top half of the draw were Wayne Doyle (Dun Laoghaire) and Joe Doheny (Borris-in-Ossory), Wayne taking a quarter final win over younger brother Ross by double scores, while Joe had an equally easy quarter final win over local player Brendan Devlin. The semi final was a close, tense game, both players struggling to get into scoring form. A late break of 86 by Wayne widened the gap that Joe never really managed to close.
The semi finalists in the bottom half of the draw were Aidan Murray (Wicklow) and Dick Brennan (Dun Laoghaire), Aidan cruising to the semi final with a high scoring quarter final against John Kehoe (Enniscorthy), including a 118 unfinished run-out, while Dick, in his first season after a long lay-off from the game, showed that he still has what it takes in taking a good quarter final win over Larry Drennan (Kilkenny). The Semi final was a very close game, Aidan initially taking an early lead with a well constructed 63 break. Although there were no further significant scoring visits on either side, Dick soon drew level and the match continued in this vein, Aidan holding his nerve in the closing stages to take the game by a mere 11 points.
In the Final, Wayne was first to show, putting in an early break of 51. Struggling against a sudden loss of form, including breaking down on his usually very reliable long in-off play, Aidan found himself falling further and further behind in the game. Despite the opportunities left him by Aidan, Wayne also struggled to amass any further reasonably high scores until, with a substantial lead at his back, he compiled a tournament winning 71 unfinished run-out.
As consolation for his first round exit, Lloyd Myers beat Robert McCrum in the final of the Plate.
The next Senior Billiards round of the season takes place at the Ivy Rooms, Carlow on Sunday, 30th March 2014. The format will be seeded draw 90 minutes, timed. Entries will be accepted before 10.30am on the morning of the event.
Our thanks are due to Phil Martin for the excellent playing facilities and to the staff at Celbridge Snooker Club for their help on the day.
