The fourth tournament of the Senior Billiards series was played at Celbridge Snooker Club on Sunday, 19th of January 2014. Wayne Doyle (Dun Laoghaire), having been to every final of the season so far, further consolidated his No 1 position in the rankings by taking the event’s honours in an absorbing Final.
Early round eliminations were Dun Laoghaire’s Victor O’Gorman, Gavin Farrell and Ross Doyle, Kilkenny’s James Bateman, Cork duo of Derek O’Neill and Lloyd Myers, Enniscorthy’s John Kehoe and local player Brendan Devlin.
The semi finalists in the top half of the draw were Wayne Doyle (Dun Laoghaire) and Dick Brennan (also Dun Laoghaire), Wayne having a solid 2-0 quarter final win over Joe Doheny (Borris-in-Ossory) while Dick took a close quarter final match against Aonghus McAnally (Portmarnock). The semi final was a high scoring game, both players making substantial breaks when at the table, the game going to Wayne with a 2-0 victory in the end.
The semi finalists in the bottom half of the draw were Eugene Hughes (Baltinglas) and Larry Drennan (Kilkenny). Eugene found himself challenged in his quarter final against Robert McCrum (Celbridge), taking the first game by a margin of 19 points, but, thanks to a break of 88, the highest of the day, finished the match with a 2-0 victory. Larry, by contrast, had a very close game with his regular practice partner, Aidan Murray (Wicklow), taking a 2-0 victory by a margin of 10 points in each game. In the semi final, Eugene, having won the first game and having lost the second, made no mistakes in the deciding game to claim his place in the final.
In a to-and-fro final, on a table that neither player fully mastered, Wayne, having lost the first game, seemed the more determined of the two in the following games taking both by substantial margins to claim the fourth tournament title of the season and his third of the season so far.
As consolation for his first round exit, James Bateman beat Lloyd Myers in the final of the Plate.
The next Senior Billiards round of the season takes place at Celbridge Snooker Club on Sunday, 23rd February 2014. The format will be seeded draw 400up. Entries will be accepted before 10.30am on the morning of the event.
